Ironically the symbols now used to commercialize Christmas have their origins in Christianity.
St. Nicholas, a.k.a. “Santa Claus,” was a 3rd century Bishop of Myra in present day Turkey. Saint Nicholas came from a very wealthy family. He used his entire inheritance to help the sick, the poor, and most of all children in need, which is why we associate St. Nick with giving presents to children.
