Funerals & Burials

The liturgy for the dead is an Easter liturgy and finds its deepest meaning in the hope of the resurrection. Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we too shall be raised. This hope does not diminish our grief; rather, it holds it with honesty and tenderness. The love we share in Christ makes our sorrow real when we are parted by death, even as we trust in God’s promise of eternal life.

Planning the Service
Funeral liturgies can be planned in advance through a consultation with the family and the clergy. If no such arrangements have been made, the clergy will work with family members to shape the service. Guidance is also available for those who wish to record their own funeral preferences ahead of time.

The service follows the Episcopal Church’s Book of Common Prayer and may include a variety of choices, including whether the body is present, Scripture readings, hymns, and the celebration of Holy Communion. Our clergy and Music Director will assist in selecting readings and music that honor the life being remembered.

The Memorial Garden
Interment of ashes in our Memorial Garden offers a way for a loved one to be laid to rest within the life and prayers of the Church, in a place of beauty and peace. In keeping with our Christian hope, we trust that those who have died return to God’s good creation, held always in God’s care and in the communion of saints. The garden also offers a place for prayer and remembrance, where family and friends may return in the years to come.

Costs
There is no fee for the funeral liturgy itself, which is offered as a sacramental rite of the Church. Some costs may apply for building use and the services of musicians and staff. Memorial gifts in honor of the deceased may be directed to St. John’s if desired.

The cost for interment is $750, which includes inscription on the memorial wall and perpetual care.

To begin arrangements, please contact the Parish Office. A member of our clergy and staff will guide you through each step of the process.
